YouLaser Prime in Harrow: Why Mixed CO₂ Laser Technology Matters
When researching laser skin rejuvenation, you will often see treatments described simply as “CO₂ laser”. However, that description does not tell you everything about the technology being used—or how your treatment will be tailored.
At Clinic N°44, we chose YouLaser Prime by Quanta System, an Italian laser manufacturer with more than 40 years of experience. It brings together two complementary laser wavelengths in one platform, giving our doctors greater flexibility when planning skin resurfacing and rejuvenation.
For patients considering laser treatment in Harrow, the key question is what that technology means for your skin, your treatment experience and your recovery.

What is YouLaser Prime?
YouLaser Prime is a fractional laser platform combining 10,600 nm ablative CO₂ with a 1550 nm non-ablative fibre laser, using Quanta Mixed Technology®.
In practical terms, it allows your doctor to combine two different types of laser treatment within one session, adjusting their contribution to suit your skin and treatment goals.
Who makes YouLaser Prime?
YouLaser Prime is made by Quanta System, an Italian company founded in 1985.
Quanta’s background extends beyond aesthetic treatments. Its history includes industrial laser applications such as marking, welding and micro-cutting, alongside the development of systems for medicine and art conservation. The company introduced its YouLaser MT combined ablative and non-ablative platform in 2013.
Today, its laser portfolio spans several fields:
Aesthetic and dermatological treatments, including hair removal, tattoo removal, selected pigmented and vascular lesions, and skin resurfacing.
Surgery, including urological lasers used for urinary stone treatment and procedures for benign prostate enlargement.
Art conservation, where laser systems help specialists clean and restore cultural objects.
For Clinic N°44, this established engineering background was part of the appeal: investing in a platform developed by a specialist laser manufacturer with experience across demanding applications.
What does “mixed technology” mean?
Mixed technology combines an ablative laser with a non-ablative laser. These create different effects within the skin.
CO₂: controlled resurfacing
The ablative CO₂ component creates microscopic columns of tissue removal. Fractional treatment leaves areas of skin between the treated columns, helping the skin recover while initiating a remodelling response. Fractional CO₂ is also used in medical scar treatment.
1550 nm: a complementary non-ablative component
The non-ablative component delivers controlled heating without removing tissue in the same way as CO₂. Combining the two approaches allows resurfacing and non-ablative treatment to contribute to the same plan.
YouLaser Prime can deliver both wavelengths to the same microscopic treatment point, with adjustable intensity and distribution.
This is the useful meaning of “two lasers in one”: two complementary treatment mechanisms that your doctor can balance, rather than simply increasing the strength of a single laser.
Why combine two laser wavelengths?
The attraction is greater control over the balance between the intended improvement and the recovery involved.
A patient prioritising texture improvement with limited time away from work may need a different approach from someone seeking more intensive resurfacing and willing to accept a longer recovery.
A mixed platform gives the treating doctor additional ways to build that plan. Quanta describes Prime’s second-generation Mixed Technology as allowing variable proportions of the two wavelengths, with treatment modes designed to support shorter recovery times.
At Clinic N°44, this flexibility is central to why we selected the device. We want to match treatment to the person, the concern and the recovery they can realistically accommodate.
Can mixed laser technology give better results with less downtime?
There is published evidence supporting the approach.
A 2016 study of combined 10,600 nm CO₂ and 1540 nm non-ablative fractional resurfacing reported reduced downtime, reduced pain during treatment and better fine-wrinkle results, with similar pigmentation results in its assessment.
That study evaluated an earlier mixed-wavelength system, rather than today’s 1550 nm YouLaser Prime. It supports the rationale for combining ablative and non-ablative treatment, but does not prove that every Prime treatment will outperform every CO₂-only treatment.
For patients, the practical benefit is the opportunity to pursue an effective treatment plan with a carefully chosen balance of resurfacing and recovery. The settings and clinical judgement remain essential.
Is YouLaser Prime less painful?
Mixed-wavelength resurfacing may offer a more comfortable treatment experience in an appropriately selected protocol. Reduced treatment pain was reported in the earlier combined-laser study.
However, laser resurfacing can still be uncomfortable. The treatment area, intensity, skin sensitivity and anaesthetic approach all affect what you feel.
Before treatment, we explain the expected sensations and the comfort measures appropriate to your plan. We would not describe intensive CO₂ resurfacing as painless.
What makes this a premium laser treatment?
For us, premium treatment means having the tools and clinical approach to personalise care.
YouLaser Prime offers a combination of wavelengths and treatment controls that gives our doctors options when planning resurfacing. Quanta’s laser engineering heritage adds to that appeal.
But the device is only part of the treatment. A premium experience should also include:
A medical assessment of your skin and concerns.
A clear explanation of the likely improvement and limitations.
Settings selected for your skin, rather than a standard treatment for everyone.
Appropriate comfort measures and eye protection.
Detailed preparation, aftercare and follow-up arrangements.
The questions to ask any clinic are: Which device are you using, why is it suitable for me, who will perform the treatment, and what recovery should I expect?
What concerns can we assess?
At your consultation, we can assess concerns such as fine lines, uneven texture, acne scarring and changes in skin firmness, then discuss whether laser resurfacing is appropriate.
Different concerns require different plans. A fine surface line is not the same problem as a deep acne scar, and skin laxity is not always best addressed through resurfacing alone.
We will also explain when another treatment, a combination approach, or no treatment would be more appropriate.
How much downtime should I expect?
There is no single downtime figure for every YouLaser Prime treatment.
A lighter treatment and an intensive resurfacing procedure should not be presented as having the same recovery. Your doctor will explain the anticipated period of visible healing and how this may affect work, social plans, skincare and makeup.
After fractional CO₂ treatment, redness, swelling, crusting and changes in skin colour can occur. More significant complications include scarring; the risk depends on the treatment and individual circumstances.
Reduced downtime means reduced recovery in a particular treatment context—not an absence of healing or aftercare.
Is it suitable for my skin?
Suitability requires an individual assessment.
We consider your skin tone, pigmentation history, previous procedures, medical conditions, medication and current skincare. Tell us about recent tanning, previous reactions to laser, cold sores or problems with healing.
Having mixed technology does not mean every setting is appropriate for every skin type. Your consultation should establish whether to proceed, how to prepare and whether another approach would be preferable.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of sessions depends on what we are treating, how intensive each session will be and how your skin responds.
Some patients prefer a staged approach; others may consider a more intensive procedure with greater recovery requirements. We will discuss the likely course before treatment and reassess progress before recommending further sessions.
Why we chose YouLaser Prime at Clinic N°44
Our decision was driven by the ability to combine established CO₂ resurfacing with a complementary non-ablative wavelength, supported by Quanta’s long history in laser development.
It gives us greater flexibility when discussing the relationship between treatment intensity, comfort and downtime.
Clinic N°44 was founded by Dr Ali Radwan Abas and Dr Ajmal Naqshbandi, both GMC-registered doctors with completed UK specialty training in General Practice. Our approach starts with medical assessment and a realistic discussion of what treatment can achieve.
We want patients to understand both the technology and the reasoning behind their individual plan.
